Jadwiga Nowak-Jezioranska

Jadwiga nee Wolska, Nowak-Jezioranska was born in żydaczów in Lwów Voivodeship. Before the she started studying at Jagiellonian University in Cracow. In 1941 she moved to Warsaw where under the pseudonym of “Greta” she took part in the underground activity. She was assigned to the Propaganda and Sabotage Branch “N” next to the Propaganda Department of BIP (Information and Propaganda Office), first she worked at the secret printing house and then as a liaison officer of the editorial section of the third department. During the Warsaw Uprising she was awarded the Cross of Merit with Swords for bravery and valor. On 7 th September 1944 she got married to Zdzisław Jezioranski, a “courier from Warsaw”, acting under the pseudonym of Jan Nowak. With her husband they smuggled to London the photographs and films which were shot during the Uprising ; she was given the Cross of Valor and was promoted to the rank of lieutent.

She started dealing with the photography at the beginning of the 50s. In 1957 she became a member of The Polish Photographic Society, cooperating with the Polish department of the YMCA in London. She took part in the World’s Exhibition of Polish Photographers Abroad; her works were presented in 1991 in Szczecin on the exhibition titled “The Polish photography in the World”. She was interested mainly in people and nature. Among the presented photographs there are both portraits and the silhouettes of people caught during the trips to Italy, Spain or the Holy Land in some typical surroundings and in the situations which are characteristic for them. Exceptionally sensitive are the photographs of Jadwiga that deal with nature, especially the landscapes of the mountains and the photographs of water with the reflected plants and objects. In many of her works one of the most important elements, thanks to which she achieved the artistic expression, is the light which either illuminates the shapes from the darkness or enhances the contrast between black and white.
